02Conversion factors

All conversions go through metres, using exact definitions:
1 mm = 0.001 m      1 in = 0.0254 m
1 cm = 0.01 m       1 ft = 0.3048 m
1 km = 1,000 m      1 yd = 0.9144 m
                    1 mi = 1,609.344 m

1 mile = 1.609344 kilometres.

6 feet = 1.8288 metres.

100 centimetres = 39.3700787 inches.

04Frequently asked questions

Are the conversion factors exact?

Yes. The inch, foot, yard and mile have been defined in exact metric terms since the 1959 international yard and pound agreement.

Is the US survey foot supported?

No. The US survey foot was officially retired at the end of 2022; this converter uses the international foot.

How precise are the results?

Results show up to 10 significant digits. Very large or very small values switch to scientific notation.
