02Encoding rules
Unsafe characters become % followed by their UTF-8 bytes in hex.
space → %20 é → %C3%A9 & → %26
Encode component also encodes : / ? # & = +
(use for a single parameter value)
Encode full URL keeps : / ? # & = so the URL still works
Decode also treats + as a space03Examples
“café & crème” as a component: caf%C3%A9%20%26%20cr%C3%A8me.
https://example.com/a b encodes to https://example.com/a%20b as a full URL.
%E2%9C%93 decodes to ✓.
04Frequently asked questions
Which mode should I use?
Use Encode component for values you insert into a URL, such as a search term. Use Encode full URL only when you have a complete address with spaces or non-ASCII characters.
Why is + decoded as a space?
HTML forms encode spaces as + in query strings. If your data has a literal plus sign, it should be encoded as %2B.
What does “invalid percent-encoding” mean?
A % must be followed by two hexadecimal digits that form valid UTF-8. A lone % or %ZZ can’t be decoded.
