Discount amount = Price × (Discount ÷ 100) Final price = Price − Discount amount Two discounts: Final = Price × (1 − D1 ÷ 100) × (1 − D2 ÷ 100)
03Examples
$120 with 25% off: you save $30.00 and pay $90.00.
$59.99 with 15% off: you save $9.00 and pay $50.99.
20% off followed by an extra 10% off is 28% off in total, not 30%.
04Frequently asked questions
Why don’t two discounts add up?
The second discount applies to the already-reduced price. 20% then 10% leaves 80% × 90% = 72% of the price, a 28% total discount.
How is rounding handled?
Calculations keep full precision. Amounts are rounded to the nearest cent only when displayed, so savings and final price may differ from the original by a cent when added.
Is sales tax included?
No. Whether tax is applied before or after a discount depends on the retailer and local rules, so apply it to the final price separately.
