01How to use the Data Storage Converter

  1. 01Type the size.
  2. 02Choose its unit.
  3. 03Read the size in both decimal and binary units.

02Conversion factors

1 byte = 8 bits

Decimal (SI): 1 KB = 1,000 B 1 MB = 1,000 KB
1 GB = 1,000 MB and so on
Binary (IEC): 1 KiB = 1,024 B 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB
1 GiB = 1,024 MiB and so on

03Examples

A 1 TB drive holds 931.32 GiB, which is why a computer may show it as “931 GB”.

1 GB = 8,000,000,000 bits.

A 4.7 GB DVD holds 4.377 GiB.

04Frequently asked questions

Why does my new drive show less space than advertised?

Drive makers use decimal units (1 GB = 10⁹ bytes). Windows reports binary units (2³⁰ bytes) but labels them GB, so the number looks about 7% smaller.

Is a kilobyte 1,000 or 1,024 bytes?

Under the SI and IEC standards, 1 KB = 1,000 bytes and 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes. Some software still uses KB to mean 1,024.

Why are internet speeds in bits?

Network speeds are quoted in bits per second. Divide Mbps by 8 to get megabytes per second.
