02What a Unix timestamp is
Seconds elapsed since 1970-01-01 00:00:00 UTC (the Unix epoch), ignoring leap seconds. Date = epoch + timestamp × 1,000 ms Values of 100,000,000,000 or more are read as milliseconds.
03Examples
0 is Thursday, 1 January 1970, 00:00:00 UTC.
1767225600 is 1 January 2026, 00:00:00 UTC.
1767225600000 is the same moment in milliseconds, as JavaScript’s Date.now() returns.
04Frequently asked questions
Is a Unix timestamp tied to a time zone?
No. It counts seconds from a fixed moment in UTC. The same timestamp shows different local times in different time zones.
What is the year 2038 problem?
Systems that store timestamps as signed 32-bit integers overflow on 19 January 2038. Modern systems use 64-bit values and are not affected.
Are negative timestamps valid?
Yes. They represent dates before 1 January 1970. For example, −86400 is 31 December 1969.
