02What is counted
Characters every character, including spaces and line breaks Without spaces characters minus spaces, tabs and line breaks Letters alphabetic characters in any language Bytes size of the text encoded as UTF-8 Emoji and accented letters count as one character each.
03Examples
“Hello, world!” is 13 characters, 12 without spaces.
A standard single SMS holds 160 characters; messages with emoji are limited to 70 per segment.
“café” is 4 characters but 5 bytes in UTF-8.
04Frequently asked questions
How are emoji counted?
Each emoji counts as one character here. Some platforms count certain emoji as two, so very close limits may differ slightly.
Why show bytes?
Databases and some APIs limit size in bytes. Characters outside basic Latin use 2–4 bytes each in UTF-8.
Is my text stored?
No. Counting happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
